well worth 3 minutes of your time.

IN MEMORY

RIP LARRY FINK

I met Larry once in 2015. He gave a short talk at an event I created and produced in NYC called The Blow Up, where people came to hear photographers speak about their images around a theme. He wanted to talk about a portrait of Malcolm X, which he had taken at a rally early in his career.

It was by far the most powerful talk of the night and well worth 3 minutes of your time.

READER SUBMISSION

Frozen August

“When you have experienced a loss, you can go a long time without dealing with it. You get carried away by everyday life. Suddenly, that grief is there again. Why can you still grieve intensely even years after the death of a loved one?

“My work gives an insight into my grieving process over the sudden death of my brother in August 1990. After 33 years of keeping silent about this, this wound is still so palpable. My world in darkness invites you to follow the trail of emotions. Body and nature become landscapes of mourning. Light and dark are about hope and despair.” —Jennifer Baron, Photographer

PROJECTS WE LOVE

Ami Vitale and over 100+ photographers are selling prints to support 13 orphaned elephants to be released back into the wild at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Kenya.

Ami has been covering the sanctuary for the past seven years, and they are now reaching a pivotal moment when the elephants can finally reunite with wild herds.

The sanctuary is unique because it is the first community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa and the first to hire indigenous women to be elephant keepers. They understand that the best protectors of wildlife are often the people living closest. This story is as much about people saving elephants as it is about the elephants saving people.

This is a celebration of nature as well as an effort to save it. —Vital Impacts

BOOK EVENT

I devoured all 250 pages of Marina Abramović’s new photography book in one sitting. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the artist: captivating, bold, fearless, and intimate. I made a note that reading through it brought up so much for me; it felt like an intense therapy session.

Incredible stories, incredible life, it’s everything.

If you’re near NYC, join Marina Abramović and editor, arts and fiction writer Katya Tylevich, for a discussion and book signing of Marina Abramović: A Visual Biography.
