‘Bird in Hand’ by Finn O’Hara

“Bird banding is one of the oldest and most important techniques used for studying and identifying individual birds. In the early 1800s, John James Audubon tied threads to birds' legs to identify individuals who were visiting his farm. In 1902, the first scientific study to use bird banding took place in the United States: Smithsonian scientists attached bands to the legs of black-crowned night herons at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C. In order to identify and keep track of individual birds, scientists put aluminum bands on birds' legs. Similar to the license plate on a car, each aluminum band is engraved with a unique set of numbers.

“I am drawn to working with bird banners for not only their care and attention that they have for the birds that they band but also the sheer human curiosity and connection that they make with each bird.” —Finn O’Hara, photographer

‘Reverting’ by Francisco Gonzalez Camacho

“This work was developed in Reykjavík with the SIM artist-in-residence program. During my stay, I photographed highly visited natural locations, which I reinterpreted in combination with the creation of my own handmade recycled paper from waste. This exploration mirrors the transformative process of manifesting something from the void —a form of alchemy of waste— with the delicate equilibrium of our environment and the perpetual cycle it follows.” —Francisco Gonzalez Camacho, photographer

‘Entropy’ by Diane Tuft

Since 1998, mixed-media artist Diane Tuft has traveled the world recording the environmental factors shaping the Earth’s changing landscape. Entropy, Tuft’s fourth monograph, focuses specifically on water and its radical transformation under the unrelenting pressures of climate change.

“Through my lens, I am driven to confront the consequences of our actions and to embrace the urgent need for change,” Tuft writes, “Earth’s fragile balance depends on water.”

🎞️ 131 prints made by Vivian Maier herself will be auctioned on May 2, 2024, in Dallas.

“In the case of the enlarged prints, they show her choices and give us a slightly different idea of what she was interested in capturing, perhaps only for herself. This matters because until now, collectors have come to know Maier’s works through the editors of her posthumous prints and publications.”—Pamela Bannos
