Roger Ballen Takes Us Into ‘The Void’

“I think the biggest misunderstanding a lot of people have about my work is that they see it only as dark. In fact, I don’t see it as dark. In nature, there’s no such thing as dark or light. Ultimately, the dark they see is a result of their own repression, their own inability to be able to reconcile their own fears.

“Most importantly, I find my pictures humorous. I don’t get depressed or anxious when I take the pictures or look at the pictures. I find most of them absurd. Absurdity is an essential element of my aesthetic, the so-called Balleneque. I think if people look at the pictures carefully and negate their own fears, they will find that the pictures are absurd and perhaps even humorous. They might even giggle or laugh.” —Roger Ballen

PHOTOGRAPHERS TO WATCH

©Smita Sharma

Smita Sharma's work on sexual and domestic traffic has resulted in raising local awareness to safeguard the lives of young girls at risk. Her book and campaign, We Cry in Silence, has included zines distributed to local stakeholders, exhibitions at locations where girls are at risk, and an education program and materials for police as well as schools. It takes a village to make a difference, and Smita is working tirelessly to create a global village around these issues.”

- Sarah Leen, Founder, The Visual Thinking Collective; Former Director of Photography, National Geographic

Smita Sharma's book, We Cry in Silence, is the culmination of seven years spent investigating the trafficking of young girls across India, Nepal, and Bangladesh." I started to work on this under-reported issue to initiate dialogue and build empathy," the photojournalist writes. "In order to protect the privacy of the girls who were trafficked, I photographed them with various techniques that would obscure their identities.

"I've worked closely with the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the police and have joined them on multiple rescue operations. When some of the officers saw my work, they said it deeply motivated them and they suggested something more permanent, which they could use as training material. These thoughts planted the seed of publishing a book." Get your copy here.
